Carinthia is the most sunny province of Austria. When the rains hit, they are most often short and heavy. The soft climate comes from the warm south-western winds coming from Italy, the powerful Hungarian ‘Pussta’ from the south-east, and the climate shield made up by the almost 4000 m high Hohe Tauern in the north. So it should not come as a surprise that Carinthia has the warmest lakes in Europe. So it should not come as a surprise that Carinthia has the warmest lakes
(more than 200) in Europe .
So hot the summers, so cold the winters. Carinthia features not only the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner (3797m), it also contains the biggest glacier of the East-alps: Pasterze. To add even more appeal, it is also a very green province. Up to 78% is covered with forest, farmland, fields, natural parks and ‘Almen’.
In Austria, Carinthia is known as the gateway to the east and south. It boarders Slovenia and Italy.
